Iron ochre is the result of the migration of ferruginous particles contained in certain types of soil, typically silty sands, which, when in contact with oxygen in French drains, produces a sludge (iron hydroxide) that accumulates on the drain walls and, over time, blocks them.
Occasionally, an iron bacteria may be present in the development of iron ochre, which in addition to creating sludge also forms gelatinous masses, further aggravating the drain blockage problem.
